Negative space... seeing the shapes around an object. Seems like a fun way to see things that others don't. All these new ways of seeing things will help with my photography as well as with my art. There's something empowering about seeing things in the world that other's don't... like I have this little secret that no one knows about that helps me enjoy the world around me. Nothing like getting a leg up on those days when the world seems cold and gray.

Learning to draw and paint negative space is very useful. As you can see from the chair you drew, there are real design possibilities. While your chair is not strictly realistic, it is an interesting and vibrant image. Certainly learning to see this way gives you a way to see the world differently than people who are not artists, allows you to enjoy the visual world more, and offers an element of surprise. Who knew an ordinary chair could be so interesting? Nice job,
A truly great chair! I did this exercise too, long ago, and my chair must be exactly the same model as yours, it looks the same. Negative space is an awesome help when drawing, I use it all the time, together with... what is THAT called, then? "Positive space"? The "normal way" of looking? Anyway. A great method to see better.
I forgot that Creative License actually has EXERCISES. Thanks for the reminder!! And I love the way my brin feels when I start looking at things in a new way. This is a GREAT chair! (Love the dramatic BLACK and WHITE!!)
